Developmental disabilities are birth defects related to a problem with how a body part or body system works. They may also be known as functional birth defects. Many of these conditions affect multiple body parts or systems.Developmental disabilities include the entire range of physical and mental disabilities, including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation etc. There are over 400 million children in India, and even using 50% of the incidence rates in the developed world, there would be over 10 million children with developmental disabilities in India.

Developmental disabilities typically become apparent within the first year of an infant's life. Parents may notice that the child does not seem to be doing what same-age peers are doing when it comes to physical or cognitive development.Concerns about developmental delays should be discussed with a pediatrician.

Early intervention for children with developmental disabilities can greatly affect the outlook for children with developmental disabilities. Therapies such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy can be especially beneficial.
